The Shooting
in the Dark Series (Ballet Paintings)
Maybe a metaphor for my life as an artist?
I
feel so fortunate to have taken a class long ago the Gibbes Studio
where they took us to a ballet rehearsal and had us sketch while the
dancers were working. From that point on, I was hooked!
That
led to my Shooting in the Dark Series of Backstage Paintings.
Most of my dancer paintings came from photos of live performances of
the Charleston Ballet Theatre. Jill
Eathorne Bahr has been so gracious letting me watch and take photos
back stage during numerous dress rehearsals and performances.

Taking
pictures in the dark, with changing light and a moving subject with no
flash… can be a bit challenging to get the picture.
My paintings are impressionistic, so working with a slightly
blurred image is sometimes better than a clear crisp one.
It encourages me to leave out some of the unnecessary details
and allows me to feel and paint the emotion.
The
scenes from backstage are stunning; with the strong stage lights
casting vibrant gold rimmed shadows around the dancers.
And the activity is mesmerizing watching the dancers prepare
for their moment on stage. The anxiety, the excitement and the energy
is incredible. My favorite shots are of deep concentration as the
dancers are in the wings, the moments when they are alone in their
thoughts, but immersed in a sea of performers.
Shooting in the Dark has been an exhilarating experience, iffy
sometimes, risky and definitely off the beaten path, but with the ever
present possibility lurking of some kind of great creative success …
kind of like the story of my life.
