A Word About Il Chiostro’s Travel Philosophy

Il Chiostro is small and personal.
We like to take time to discover a place and meet the people.
That’s why most of our programs concentrate on just one location for a full week.  Italy,
in particular, is a place that must seep into your skin leisurely.  We do not use tour buses
except to travel between major destinations.  We look for non-traditional accommodations
that represent the character and history of a place.
We also place a high value on food that is characteristic of the area.  We want your time in
Italy to be a full experience of the place, not just a checklist of popular sights to see.  All
activities and excursions planned outside of the workshop are optional and no one should ever
feel obligated to participate.  Il Chiostro has been organizing workshops in Tuscany for over
10 years and we let our experience reveal the details of local life and culture for our guests.

The main activity for the week will be the painting workshop.

But there will be plenty of time for excursions to Siena or Florence or the surrounding hill towns to give the organizers and participants an opportunity to explore the art, food and culture of the area.

Accommodations: Note from Karen - this program was
previously scheduled for The Contessa's Vineyard in Tuscany
but has been relocated to a property down the road a bit
called San Fedele.  Everything else in the program is the same, except the lodging.

I visited San Fedele in 2008 and thought it was lovely. Il Chiostro began holding programs at San Fedele in 2008.

San Fedele is a monastery that dates back to the 13th century which has been completely restored in the last couple of years.
The accommodations are first class, with modern bathrooms in each room, wi-fi, painting studios and all modern comforts.

The wonderful thing about the restoration, however, is that the new owners kept the original spirit of the place intact. They used all original materials and decorated in a palette that suits the structure.

San Fedele is set among Chianti vineyards and sits on a hill halfway between the village of Vagliagli and the town of Radda – both great painting spots.

Beautiful vistas and traditional scenes to paint are everywhere!

Meals:

  IMGP5132.jpg (824203 bytes)

Meals
The group will have it’s own private chef for the week.

At Il Chiostro, the food experience is very important to us.
We want everyone to be exposed to the delicious simplicity of authentic Tuscan food, which includes plenty of fresh vegetables, meats, pasta, risotto, fruits, local herbs, and desserts like panforte and tiramisu.

Lunch is light and self serve. Breakfast and dinner are served in the dining room daily.  Local wine (Chianti) is included with dinner.    There are many opportunities for eating in the village, picnics or on excursions.

Transportation:

Transportation
All local transportation for excursions and to and from
plein air
sites will be provided by Il Chiostro.

We normally provide transfers to/from the Siena train station, but if your group is traveling together, we can arrange a van to pick you up in Florence and take you to Il Chiostro.

For returns, we will provide a van that delivers you to Sienna, where you can get a bus back to Florence for your departure.
