Shrimpers' Light Original Oil 16x16

Painted en plein air - Darien Georgia
> Notes for Painters - I
got a lot of questions about this board while I was at the PAP-SE event,
so I thought I'd post this for the painters and students. This painting
was done on a gessoed birch board called an Elephant Canvas. No
canvas, just smooth wood that had been primed. It makes the important
strokes stand out in a great way. The paint just lays on top and holds
the brush strokes in light areas. Sometimes, I really like using
these boards for smaller
works like this. It worked well for the effect I was after in this
painting.
>The painting
below is also on a wood board, but it has linen glued to the top.
The linen has a coarse weave which shows through a bit,
giving the painting a rustic type of feel.

Notes about the
2008 PAP-SE Event
It was a great painting trip to
St. Simons Island. It's an incredible place to paint. Natural unspoiled
beauty is just everywhere!
These two smaller plein air
paintings as well as the large studio painting are on view at Anderson
Fine Art Gallery who is hosting the Annual PAP-SE Event. The Opening is
Friday, April 25th.
There will be over 100 wet paintings in the event from painters from all
over the Southeast!

For me, this method of painting is a great
aid to making larger studio paintings, as it gives me the personal
experience of close and careful study and observation of nature. I work
smaller (usually) when working "en plein air" bur some
painters also create large works in this method.
