Plein Air Workshop (oil) with Karen Hewitt Hagan - Kingsport, TN

August 21-23, 2008
Thursday, Friday, Saturday
9am until 4pm

Supply list for Workshop with Karen Hewitt Hagan

These are the colors and supplies that I currently use.
You may bring whatever supplies you are comfortable using.
***Please bring 2-3 small panels per class day***
(8x10’s or 6x8’s are great!)

The most important thing is that you can easily carry all of your gear in one bag and that you have experimented with your colors, brushes and easel prior to the workshop. I’m looking forward to seeing you!
Please call me if you have any questions!

Field Easel & Wet Panel Carrying Box

Windsor Newton Artists Oil Colors Brand
(unless noted)

I currently use the OPEN BOX M
(8x10) light weight easel.  Any kind of light-weight travel easel is ok. As long as you can carry it easily.

The only kind of easel I don’t recommend is the French Easel. They are really heavy and cumbersome on a trip like this.

I carry my easel in a rolling bag that is also a backpack that came from Wallmart. ($20)

I use a lightweight tripod.  Everything I need including my panels, and panel storage box fit into the one rolling backpack.

I use the RAYMAR plastic 8x10 storage pack that holds 8 wet paintings. (about $20)

Panels
I currently use (and love) the Source Tek

Linen Panels on thin birch boards from www.CanvasPanels.com in 8x10 sizes.

The other kind of panels I have used in the past are Panneli Telati from Jerry’s Art A Rama.

You are encouraged to use lots of 6x8’s, some 8x10’s or something comparable in size. Please bring enough panels for 2-3 paintings per day. Bring whatever kind of panels you prefer.  Remember smaller is better when traveling.  About Flying with your art supplies:

I will tell you what has worked in the past for me. Please check w/ your airline for current rules and regulations.

I always have carried on my paints, easel and brushes w/  my panels every time I fly.  I put the paints in a baggie, so they can see them. Seems ok so far.  As always I carry an extra set of clothes in the carry on along with passport or pertinent travel documents.  Then I check a bag with extra paint and panels and brushes.   If it is an international trip, we will get the mineral spirits for you. If in the US, you can get them when you arrive.  You can't board a plan with any kind of solvents.

A note about shoes:  Please bring proper waking or hiking shoes.

And, as always, I bring several light layers of clothing, so I can stay warm or pare down to a t-shirt as the day warms up.   See you soon!

Titanium white

Cad Yellow Light* (Gamblin Brand)

Alizarin Crimson or Permanent Rose

French Ultramarine Blue
Sap Green
Yellow Ochre Pale
Burnt Sienna
Manganese Blue Hue
Cad Orange (Gamblin Brand) (optional)
Blue Black (optional)

Please do NOT get WINTON brands. They are cheaper (and don’t perform well)  and their packaging looks almost just like the Windsor Newton Artist Oil Colors.

Brushes: Primarily Robert Simmons Signet BRISTLE  Filberts & Brights numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.  And, I usually have one nylon or sable-like bright in a size about 5 or 6.

One long thin pallet knife

One color shaper tool – any size (long handle, slanted rubber tip usually used in sculpting)

*Cadmium yellow light is very important to me. Lemon yellow can be substituted, but cadmium yellow regular won’t work for me. The Gamblin cad yellow light is very cool yellow which can be used to make all the other warmer yellows.  It really is the best if you want to carry just one yellow. Please experiment with this color prior to the workshop.

Other things to bring:
A hat with dark under brim. Neutral or dark colored t-shirt or tops
Paper towels
Small trash bags
Brush washer or container to hold mineral spirits
A few sheets of waxed paper – to put between dryish paintings on the way home.
2 bulldog clips or clothes pins.
Small bungie cord
Umbrella - (I don’t usually use one)
Sketch book with pencil and black sharpie
Camera, battery charger & extra memory card(s)

Medium:
Usually, I don’t use any.
We will provide the mineral spirits for you

Getting your paint to dry quicker:
Galkyd Paints - On trips like these, I like my oil paints to dry a bit quicker, so I add a tube of blue and one tube of white in the Griffin Alkyd Fast Drying Oil Color and mix them about half and half.

All of my paints can be ordered from www.JerrysArtARama.com

And,
