Notes
This is a huge painting, for me. It measures 36x48 unframed; about 44 by
56 framed. Since my studio has been on the boat for the last 5 years, this
kind of large scale work has been kind of off limits. But now that I'm
working in the new studio some of the time on Johns Island...it's just
fabulous to sink my teeth into a project this large.
I loved this scene because the
composition of the natural landscape just drew me in. I was pretty faithful
to my image when working on this painting. I knew most of the painting
would be about the lushness of the marsh grasses, but that the sky area
was equally important, even though it's only a third of the space.
Painting clouds are one of my great
loves. I am so inspired and happy when I see these blue sky days with the
white puffy clouds. The just seem happy to me. (sappy, I know, but
true)
The marsh composition is designed to
get you into the painting with the vibrant greens and golds in the front
of the painting, the creek then transports you to the distant marshlands,
pure and unspoiled and the of course, the real star of the painting (to
me) is the clouds. They have a lot of thick heavy spontaneous brush
strokes in them. When painting clouds I have to plan them carefully
(so that they look real, loose and free) and then implement them in one
application. It adds to the freshness of them if they're not overworked or
"brushed down". Or at least that's my taste and what I love
about paintings, when I can see the hand of the artist and know that those
strokes went on confidently and boldly.
Click under the painting to see a
detail of the clouds. Hope you enjoy!
