Flipsides
- Artist's Notes on the backs of paintings
I like to write. It's been a part of my
creative process for a long time now. It used to be that I wrote
before I got started on a painting. Sitting in the smallest room of
my house (when I had a house) trying to summon the inspiration to go
up those 14 stairs to my studio and pick up a brush and begin.
Trying to figure out what I might paint and how, wondering if I would
ever be able to make a painting that was as beautiful as I
wanted. That was when I was
working totally in the studio from a lot of really poor photos
and mainly, before I had discovered plein air painting and all it's fascinations.
Now it seems that I don't have time to paint all the things
that inspire me. But I still save a little time for writing...
many times just after I've painted a small painting out in the
landscape, I'll record my feelings about the scene or about the
feelings of the day
on the back of the painting. Just unrehearsed and from my heart.
Very unedited. Hopefully not too embarrassing to me later.
Sometimes the words find their way onto the back of the panel
after I've returned to the studio or onto the back of a small
studio painting. The written notes make
the memories linger a bit longer, freshen the feelings I had when I
was painting. I enjoy writing them, I feel compelled
somehow to make these notes. I hope you'll enjoy reading
them. Karen
I'll try to find some of the others that
I've made notes on and get them posted here soon. I always
like hearing if you like these kinds of
things. Email
