Artist's
Notes from Italy
Our
painting & teaching trip to Tuscany, Venice & Cinque Terre June was
very inspiring.
We had 3 days in Venice to study that wonderful ancient city with all
it's 400 bridges and fascinating gondolas everywhere
and as a extra special treat we got to see the John Singer Sargent
paintings at the Museo Correr... 50 of them and they
were indeed stunning. Then we had 7 nights in the Chianti region on the Contessa's farm in Tuscany
where we taught a class
of 12 wonderful students. I feel like I could stay on that
property (Le Lodoline) forever. It's a working olive farm with authentic
Tuscan farm houses rising from
the earth, beautiful vistas even some poppies! Then we were off to Cinque
Terre (5 villages
by the Mediterranean Sea
on the Italian Riviera) for a few days painting by the mountains and the
ocean. Those villages were
filled with the most awesome colorful dinghies that I think I have ever seen. And, I've seen
a lot of dinghies. Impressive and oh
so
inspirational to be immersed in that landscape.
Hope you enjoy!

Standing here painting this little village in Cinque Terre was one of
the biggest treats of my life. I had this wonderful view of these
funny little boats and the brilliant sunlit umbrellas and was just a
step away from ordering my next cappuccino at the bar. I was trying to
capture the way the Italians make such good use of space when they
have to pull the boats up because of rough waters. They just pile them
into the little crooked streets overlooked by the wine bars and
restaurants. It's a colorful and busy scene...

Italian Dinghy 10x8 SOLD
Oil Sold I was
pretty excited when I saw these little boats in Cinque Terre in the
village of Vernazza. What a sight for an artist to have these colorful
boats lined up with these orange red mooring balls floating all
around. The sun was perfect lending shadow and strong light on the
boat. I didn't get to paint on site here, but this was one of
the first photos I painted from on when I got home. That one harbor in
Vernazza has provided what I think will be a life time of beautiful
inspiration with these bright boats and sunbathers all about.

This was the view from the Contessa's Farm.
Every time I looked at it - it changed as the light shifted.
The view from the farm looks over the hills to the distant villages,
Sienna being one of them about
10 miles away. I just loved the patchwork of the fields and the
cypress tress bordered by the
blue mountains in the background!

This is the view from mid-property at the Contessa's, looking
Eastward. The houses shown are where we and the students stayed.
They are authentic Tuscan farmhouses that have been in the Contessa's
family for hundreds of years.
